MORE ON SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION
Search engine friendliness
Firstly, before looking at pro-active methods of attracting search engine traffic, you will need your site to be 'search engine friendly'. What this means is using good practice techniques when building a site that engine spiders will like, and at the same time not putting up any barriers.
A classic example of a barrier is using a simple splash page with a JavaScript redirect to the main site homepage. Typically, search engine spiders do not follow JavaScript links, and so they will not get past the first page of your site to index the rest.
All of the sites Chameleon Net builds are search engine friendly by default, and we also conduct work for clients to amend existing sites after they have been constructed, usually when a client finds they are not ranking very well with the main search engines.
Search engine optimisation
According to Google, the golden rule of providing good search engine results is relevancy. Most users of engines would agree - if you can enter a search phrase that then returns the most relevant type of results, then that has been a successful search.
Engines will have their own methods of deciding what makes a relevant web page. So select which engines are important to you. Clearly Google has a very high market share, but other engines are valuable too, such as Yahoo, MSN or the Overture network.
To do well with engines it's crucial to understand roughly how the ones you want to target work. This is done through experience of what works and what does not, and also recognising any changes in the way an engine spiders and indexes.
Chameleon Net has extensive experience in optimizing sites, using both technical and non-technical avenues, to improve rankings against desired key phrases.
Pay per click advertising (PPC)
This is a service offered by most search engines whereby you can set up a series of key phrases that you would like your site to be found under when they are searched for.
Usually the set of results your site will appear in is clearly indicated as a sponsored result. The amount you pay varies, but is based on a per-click model - i.e. if someone clicks the link you pay an amount. You can set uppper limits on how much you should pay per click for a particular key phrase.
The set up and management of PPC campaigns can be time consuming and it is helpful to know the tricks and tips around bidding, budgeting, writing ads, selecting key phrases, estimating traffic, etc.
Chameleon Net provides services to set up and manage effective PPC campaigns.
