We love our work 'I have no hesitation in recommending Chameleon Net. They are great people to work with.' Said Dajani, Website Manager, Alzheimer's Society

Waste Online

Waste Watch is a leading charity promoting sustainable resource-use in the UK. Together with the Chartered Institution of Waste Management and the National Waste Awareness Initiative, they formed a consortium. The consortium successfully bid for and subsequently received a grant from the New Opportunities Fund (NOF), a distributor of lottery money, to partake in NOF's digitisation project.

Business requirements

The aim of the consortium's part of the project was to:

  • Create an on-line encyclopaedia of waste and waste management information in the form of a publicly accessible website.
  • To provide a unique model for the creation of innovative on-line learning resources for the potential benefit of every citizen in the UK.
  • To digitise all paper and electronic documentation/information into a standard format.
  • Ensure the website was set to W3C and BOBBY standards, i.e. accessible by all users, including those with visual disabilities.

Chameleon Net's solution

Chameleon Net's remit was to design and build all the technical infrastructure and software for the site. Whilst doing so they had to adhere to rigid technical standards relating to document storage, indexing and retrieval to ensure the easy location and uploading of documents by users.

The website provides a repository for hundreds of texts, articles and papers all connected with the issues of waste, recycling and sustainability. The underlying document protocol on the site is XHTML which is fundamentally application independent. Chameleon Net also advised on the process of digitising the documents. Chameleon hosts the site on a dedicated server.

Chameleon Net is proud to have won the March 2003 CRN/Syscap Approved Technology Innovator Award for this project, the press article in Computer Reseller News can be viewed on: http://crn.vnunet.com/Features/1139539
